 Homework Presentation

This presentation reinforced my take on homework in that, a number of factors need to be taken into consideration when administering homework.  The statement ‘when teachers assign homework, they make assumptions, in my belief, is a very significant point.  By assigning homework one is assuming that a parent or caregiver has; the time to assist their child; the knowledge and understanding to do so; the resources needed, such as a computer or access to the internet.  It could be assumed that these aspects will vary greatly with children coming from diverse backgrounds, thus I believe homework could be detrimental when trying to create an inclusive classroom.  Additionally, I can’t help but wonder; if a teacher considers these aspects and still wishes to assign homework, should they set the same expectations for each student if they know the assistance and resources each student has access to differ greatly.  I personally don’t think they should, however creating individualised homework seems rather problematic in that it may send a false message to the student, and their family, about their ability.   Consequently, I believe that when considering assigning homework, it would be wise to involve parents/caregivers in the decision over whether homework should be assigned or not.
At the risk of contradicting myself, I think homework does have its place in regard to consolidating knowledge and as a form of summative assessment.  If the homework consists of something the students have learnt in class are able to do independently, I believe if the circumstances allow, it could be appropriate to assign it as homework.
